  New CNC Lathes----Design and Structure of Turn-Mill Composite Machining Centers

  Newly developed CNC lathes are usually composed of a rigid bed, spindle, turret and multi-axis motion system, sub-spindle and tailstock, and computer control system. The bed provides dynamic rigidity and vibration resistance and supports other components. Designed as tilted or flat bed type, it is convenient for chip removal and coolant recovery. High-torque direct-drive motor or electric spindle, optional independent milling spindle (B axis), power turret integrated milling function, realize turning and milling synchronization (for example: turning and milling compound center with Y axis). The multi-axis motion system adopts heavy-duty linear guide rails to ensure stability under high-speed motion. Sub-spindle: used for back processing, synchronously clamping the workpiece with the main spindle to achieve seamless connection of double-sided processing. Hydraulic or servo-driven tailstock, suitable for rigid support of long-axis workpieces. Break the boundaries between traditional lathes and milling machines, and support compound processing such as turning, milling, drilling, tapping, boring, etc.

  When the traditional standard turning center needs to mill the plane on the workpiece, it can only be done by polar coordinate interpolation between the machine tool spindle (C axis) and the X axis. The fatal disadvantage is that the milled plane is not a theoretically true straight plane, but an approximate plane replaced by a circular arc with a large radius of curvature, and the processing efficiency is low. In addition, the plane milling size range of this structure is small, and large allowance milling cannot be performed, which restricts the application of this type of machine tool. Therefore, turning center machines with this type of structure are generally low-end products among such models.

  Another structure that is currently frequently used is to install the power turret component on the Y-axis column, drive the ball screw and the power turret box through a servo motor, and make the turret perform a pure Y-axis linear feed along the column guide rail. Obviously, the advantage of this structure is that the Y-axis movement is direct, no interpolation synthesis movement is required, and the Y-axis stroke is generally large. However, this structure also has its own shortcomings: First, the force on the Y-axis column is not very reasonable, the overhang is too large, and the overturning torque is large when cutting with large allowance, which can easily cause vibration of the machine tool mechanical system, thereby affecting the processing accuracy and workpiece surface. Second, the structural size of the machine tool is larger.

The reason is that its Y-axis movement is composed of a middle support plate with an inclined angle and a horizontal bed guide rail. Since the motion trajectory is continuously interpolated between the two axes, it is close to the milling state of rigidity. The rigidity of the machine tool established by this structure is determined by the structural layout, especially when the machine tool performs strong turning processing. This advantage is more obvious. There is no overhang of the turret on the Y axis, and the accuracy and efficiency that can be achieved during plane milling operations are currently the good of this type of milling compound center.
